Therapists Need Safe Spaces Too

If you’re a therapist who’s been quietly questioning things, wondering why the way you were taught or expected to practise doesn’t sit right anymore, you’re not alone.

Maybe it’s the pressure to prioritise outcomes over relationships. Maybe it’s the feeling that you’re holding so much for others, with no place to land yourself.

I want you to know something really important:

You are not the problem.

Actually, you might just be the breath of fresh air this profession needs.

The truth is, we need safe spaces too. Not just the ones where we tick off supervision hours or log another PD. I’m talking about real spaces. Spaces where we can take a deep breath and say:

“This doesn’t feel right to me.”
“I want to support my clients differently, but I’m scared I’ll get it wrong.”
“I’m tired. This isn’t sustainable.”

If any of that sounds familiar, please hear this — you are not failing. You’re paying attention.

And if no one has said it yet, let me be the one to tell you.

You are allowed to practise in a way that feels like you. You’re allowed to unlearn what no longer fits, and explore new ways that feel more connected, more human, more aligned with your values. You can care deeply, and let that care lead the way.

The cost of unsafe spaces

In my work mentoring therapists, I’ve seen this so often. Beautiful, big-hearted clinicians who care so much, but feel isolated, stuck or completely burnt out. You’re carrying so much for others — and maybe you haven’t had anywhere to lay it all down.

Supervision might feel like a tick-box exercise. PD might leave you with more questions than clarity. And when your heart is set on practising in ways that are inclusive and respectful, those spaces can feel like the opposite of what you need.

Especially when you’re leaning into neurodiversity affirming practice, and the world around you still expects you to justify every shift.

What we really need

We need more than information. We need community.

We need spaces where we can be honest, say “I’m not sure what to do here,” and be met with kindness. We need places where it’s okay not to know, where we can wrestle with the hard stuff and still feel safe, seen and respected.

This is the kind of space I hold in my work as a Neurodiversity Affirming Practice Mentor in Australia. Not a place for perfection or performance. But somewhere you can let your shoulders drop, ask big questions, and grow a practice that actually feels good.

Here, your values matter. Your voice matters. And you don’t have to do it all alone.

You’re allowed to want that

You’re allowed to crave more connection. More meaning. More room to breathe.
You’re allowed to seek out support that actually supports you.
And yes, you’re allowed to be held for a change.

If that’s what your heart’s calling for, I’d love to walk alongside you.
